At Birch Hill Primary School, we believe every child should have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, contribute to school life and make a positive difference in our community. Through a range of leadership opportunities, children learn to take responsibility, support others, work collaboratively and develop the confidence to influence positive change.

Our Aim

We want every child at Birch Hill to feel valued, listened to and empowered to lead. By providing a wide range of leadership opportunities, we help children develop the confidence and skills they need to make a difference today and in the future.

Our Children's Leadership opportunities provide children with meaningful ways to represent others, take responsibility, support their peers and help shape the future of our school. Through these roles, children develop confidence, teamwork, communication, resilience and a strong sense of active citizenship.

We encourage all children to recognise that their voice matters and that they can play an important role in helping our school community thrive.

School Council

The School Council gives children a platform to represent the views, ideas and interests of their classmates.

At the beginning of each academic year, children in Years 2 to 6 elect representatives through a democratic voting process. Candidates present speeches to their peers, explaining how they would represent their class and contribute to school improvement.

School Council members meet regularly to:

• Represent the views of their classes.
• Discuss school improvement ideas.
• Lead fundraising initiatives.
• Gather children's feedback.
• Support school events and projects.
• Contribute to decisions that affect school life.

School Council members regularly share feedback and outcomes with their classes, helping to ensure that all children have opportunities to contribute ideas and opinions about school life.

The School Council helps children understand democracy, responsibility and active citizenship while ensuring that children's voices are heard and valued.

House Captains

All children from Year 1 onwards belong to one of our four houses:

• Earth
• Fire
• Water
• Wind

These house names were chosen by the children and reflect our commitment to involving children in decisions about school life.

Each house is led by two elected Year 6 House Captains who:

• Encourage teamwork and participation.
• Promote our school values.
• Support younger members of their house.
• Represent their team at school events.
• Celebrate achievements and successes.

Children earn house points for demonstrating positive behaviour, excellent effort, kindness, resilience and commitment to learning. Throughout the year, children participate in a range of house competitions, including sporting, creative and academic challenges.

School Buddies

Our School Buddies help create a positive and inclusive environment during lunchtimes and social times.

They:

• Support younger children.
• Encourage friendships and inclusion.
• Help organise playground activities.
• Promote positive behaviour and kindness.
• Help children feel safe, happy and involved.

This role allows children to develop empathy, responsibility and leadership skills while supporting the wellbeing of others.

Eco Warriors

Our Eco Warriors work to improve the school environment and promote sustainability.

They help to:

• Encourage recycling and reducing waste.
• Promote environmental awareness.
• Support biodiversity and outdoor learning projects.
• Encourage sustainable choices throughout the school.
• Help care for our school grounds.

Through this leadership role, children develop a greater understanding of environmental responsibility and how they can make a positive impact on the world around them.

Computing Ambassadors

Our Computing Ambassadors champion the use of technology across the school and promote positive digital citizenship.

They help to:

• Support children and staff with technology.
• Promote safe and responsible use of digital devices.
• Encourage positive online behaviour.
• Share digital skills and knowledge.
• Support online safety initiatives and events.
• Act as role models for digital learning.

This role helps children develop confidence, problem-solving skills and leadership in an increasingly digital world.

Developing Future Leaders

Through our Children's Leadership programme, children develop valuable life skills including:

• Problem solving
• Resilience
• Empathy
• Decision making

These opportunities help children develop an understanding of democracy, responsibility, teamwork and active citizenship, preparing them for life in modern Britain.
