Friends of Birch Hill
All parents, carers and staff are automatically members of the Friends Association and are warmly invited to attend our meetings. Meetings are usually held monthly in the staff room, and everyone is welcome. Just come along!
What do Friends do?
The Friends Association raises money to support the school and enhance opportunities for our children. We do this mainly by organising fun events for pupils, families and the wider community.
Our events have included:
- Fireworks Display
- School Disco
- Circus Event
- Quiz Night
- Christmas Bazaar
- Summer Fête
We have also organised community projects, including a volunteer dig to help transform part of the playground's wild area into a space for outdoor learning.
The Impact of Friends
The Friends Association plays an important role in enriching school life and creating opportunities that enhance pupils' learning, wellbeing and enjoyment of school.
Through fundraising and community events, Friends has helped provide improved play equipment, technology for classrooms and outdoor learning opportunities. Current fundraising efforts aim to create a new Sensory Garden, which will offer a calm and inclusive space for children to relax, reflect and regulate their emotions.
Just as importantly, Friends events help bring together pupils, families, staff and the wider community, strengthening the sense of belonging that makes Birch Hill School such a special place.
Where does the money go?
Funds raised by Friends help provide additional resources and improvements that directly benefit our pupils.
Previous projects have included:
- £19k replacing the old climbing frame with a fantastic new play structure
- £10k for new interactive screens in Reception and Year 1 classrooms
- £5k contribution to the Edible Playground project
We are currently fundraising to raise £20k to replace Shady Birch creating a calm space for children to enjoy.
How does it work?
Each year, members elect a committee at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The committee is responsible for:
- Chairing and recording meetings
- Communicating with parents and carers
- Organising fundraising events
- Managing the association's finances

How to Volunteer
There are many ways to get involved, whatever time you can offer.
You could:
- Help organise or plan an event
- Volunteer at a stall during the Summer Fête or Christmas Bazaar
- Assist with setting up or clearing away at events
- Promote events through social media or word of mouth
- Share ideas for fundraising activities
- Support specific projects and improvements around the school
Whether you can give an hour, help occasionally or become a regular volunteer, every contribution is valued and helps make a difference for our children.
